So rented a seafront hotel room with balcony, to capture the 8 hour event through the night. I know forecasts cant be relied on but thankfully, this forecast got it right this time! Clear skies all the way through The hotel balcony provided a great view of the Lunar Eclipse as I watched our moon turn slowly redder and redder.

What an amazing sight. For this sequence, I faced a slight problem. I had no end point when the eclipse finished due to my hotel balcony view in Hastings just clipping the end part of the eclipse. I didnt want to do this outside for fear of a few drunks around I saw out on the street that night! But my balcony view was good enough for my to have a near complete sequence. How to present it without that final full moon emergence, though? Well, as you can see, my solution was to sequence it as a circle in which it wraps around back to the full moon that was taken just before the eclipse.

As a bonus, I did not have to rotate the images as this was automatically rotating due to my tracking mount being an Alt-Az Altitude-Azimuth which naturally rotates the view over time. My selections of exposures is not perfect but this is the very first time I have done an image sequence and I am very happy with what I have done here as my first time. I had so many images of different ISOs and shutterspeed exposure settings at every stage so I was able to pick and choose to give this mosaic the smoothest consistent transition of tones I could get.

At opposition, it will be about To do it well, I'll have to master automatic filter wheel changes, automated acquisition sequences and planetary guiding. Its interesting that the software thinks my focal length is actually mm - could be because there is a long imaging train of focuser, flip mirror box, filter wheel and Barlow attached to the end of the scope!

Focusing by moving the primary mirror of an SCT also affects focal length. I set up autorun sequencing in FireCapture 2. Luckily, AutoStakkert! I managed to get autoguiding running in FireCapture by using ASCOM to control my mount but it wasn't as accurate as me doing the guiding manually. Overall, Ive got FireCapture to control my electronic focuser, filter wheel and mount using ASCOM and am getting to grips with planetary guiding and acquisition sequencing.

Yesterday, I uploaded an image of the M13 which I felt rather chuffed with considering its taken in London on an Alt-az mount at my living room window. So I proudly showed my mentor, Rupert. Then he tells me, I can do better with the data I have. And bloody hell, sure enough, I get a hell of a lot more detail and colours from just using the ISO frames X 4sec exposures.

This is because the higher ISOs' higher noise levels serve as a bottleneck to extracting all the information possible. But nope, my mentor, Rupert was right as he always isits the opposite.

So yesterday, I set about showing that we can do deep space astrophotography from inside the house at a bedroom or living room window in inner London but today, I humbly present a better example.

My original writeup on this restricted capture imaging project and my thoughts on The Great Hercules Cluster M13 is on my previous image. Of course, this a line of sight perception as the galaxies are a 17 million light years away ie so far that it took light 17 million years to reach us!

You will notice the sky is blue at the beginning as the moon was up and nearly full but it had soon set and so the sky became darker and the galaxies become more pronounced. ISO very high hence why its so noisy, sorry, but as its a timelapse, I wanted the galaxies to punctuate more.

A smartphone adapter will hold your phone in place above the eyepiece. Not only is it very difficult to centre the object properly, it can be tricky to ensure that the object is well exposed. A simple adapter will improve your smartphone astrophotography immensely. Smartphone cameras have excellent resolution and many now have the manual exposure control settings needed to evenly expose the entire lunar disc or to capture subtle planetary features. On some phones, Jupiter, Saturn, Venus, Mars, and the Moon will be too bright on the camera screen by default.

The photos above show the difference between single images L vs. As with most astronomical pursuits, your skills will improve with practice. Experiment with different eyepieces, filters, and software and understand that the image quality is only partially in your hands. The same techniques might produce dramatically better or worse!

Using the NightCap app, which mimics the long exposures of DSLR cameras, I was able to obtain a high-quality image of the Orion Nebula that was recently featured on the website io9! No stacking was required to record the colour and detail found in this nebula.
